FIELD TRIPS

Winter-Spring 2008

Jan. 19  Gulf State Park Nature Center, Water Treatment Plant, Magnolia Landfill. We will meet at 8:00 am at Burger King in Gulf Shores on the NW corner of Hwy. 59 and 182 (road to Fort Morgan). The Nature Center will open at about 8:30 for us.  Next we will check for waterfowl, shorebirds, and waders at the Gulf Shores Water Treatment Plant. On the way back we will stop by the landfill for gulls, looking especially for rarities such as Iceland, Glaucous, Lesser Black-backed, and Thayer’s. Call Bill Summerour (251/945-3188) if directions are needed.

Jan. 25-27 Joe Wheeler State Park for AOS winter meeting. Meet at 7:00 am in the Lodge lobby to join various field trips in the area on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Feb. 16  Five Rivers to view new facilities and walk trails for whatever we can find. Meet at 8:00 am in the Conservation Office parking lot.  The entrance to Five Rivers is straight across from (north of) the entrance to Meaher State Park. When the entrance road forks, go left to go to the Conservation Office.  The road to the right goes to the various Five Rivers facilities.

Mar. 29  Fort Morgan for early migrants.  Meet at 8:00 am at the picnic area immediately east of the ferry landing parking lot.

April 5-6 Five Rivers for International Migratory Bird Day activities.  Call Tom Siegwald after mid-March to get details (251/666-1762).

April 18-20 Dauphin Island for AOS spring meeting. Meet at 8:00 am at the Shell Mounds on Saturday for CBA field trip.

May 3  Gaillard Island for nesting pelicans, terns, and gulls. This trip involves volunteer boatmen and we will need an accurate count of participants before the trip.  We are tentatively planning to meet at the Alabama Department of Conservation office on the Mobile Causeway across from Meaher Park at 8:00 am on Saturday, May 17.  If you plan to join us on this trip, you must contact Bill Summerour (251-945-3188 or email billsummerour@gulftel.com) about 2 weeks before the trip date to reserve a spot on the boat(s) to the island. The launch location and time of departure may change or cancel, so please stay in touch with Bill so you won’t get left behind or show up for a canceled trip.  All safety precautions will be taken by our expert boatmen who are familiar with Mobile Bay weather.

WARNING:  The island will be pungent and noisy. You will need a hat or head covering, water, and insect spray. Be prepared for discomfort.  You may get wet getting on/off the boat at the island. We anticipate great view of young birds so bring your camera as well as binoculars!

May 24 Five Rivers and along Hwy. 225 for breeding birds. Meet at 8:00 am in the Conservation Office parking lot on the causeway (see Feb 16 directions). We will travel to several private areas to check wildlife.  After a morning of birding, we will gather at a restaurant on the causeway for our end-of-the-year lunch meeting to elect new officers in our usual casual manner.

For directions to field trip locations or if you have any questions, call Bill Summerour at 251-945-3188 or Tom Siegwald at 251-666-1762.  Field trips may be canceled due to adverse weather or other reasons, so call Bill or Tom if in doubt.
